Early Years News
Hello Parents and Carers,
Thank you so much for all your support this year. Our staff have worked extremely hard to support students to achieve their Individual Education Plans goals this semester despite so many students and staff away from school due to illness.
Reports will be sent home this week. Please contact the front office if your child’s report has not reached you. You will be invited to meet with teachers early in Term 3. This is a perfect opportunity to ask questions about the report, therapy and also to discuss and update student health plans. You are welcome to invite your child’s therapists to the IEP meeting.

Primary News
Dear Parents and Carers,
This term has flown by!
Thank you to Room 19 and Room 20 for putting on fantastic assemblies in the last few weeks. It has been great to see the students put on their item and showcase what they have been learning about throughout the term.
On June 6th, most of the Primary teachers attended a Science and Technologies ‘show and tell’ session after school. This gave our team an opportunity to explore and discuss some of our new resources we have in the library and to talk about our phase planning for Science and Technologies moving into Term 3. The teachers were able to use the Osmo kits, Duplo robotics, Bee Bots as well as plan out their units of work using the Primary Connections resources. It was great to come together to discuss curriculum for the Primary years.
There are a few carnivals coming up that Primary students will be invited to participate in:
- AFL Starkick Carnival- Education Support School and Centres across Metro and Regional WA participate- run by WAFC
- Cricket Carnival- organised by Carson Street School, WA Cricket and Rotary for Education Support Schools
- Our own school sports carnival (next term)
More information will come so watch this space!
The teachers have been busy with finalising the semester and writing student reports. These will be sent home next week.
We appreciate your support throughout this semester. I hope that everyone has a nice holiday period, stays safe and well, and we’ll see everyone back on Tuesday 18th July.
Thank you.
Kind Regards,
Simon Hume

Satellite News
Kaya,
Hello Parents and Carers
Term 2 has been a busy term. Satellite 3 & 4 wrapped up their football program with Football Futures. It was a pleasure to have Mick and his team over to teach the students some football skills, I know they had a great time participating. Some notes went home to the parents about some clubs that offer inclusive football. We hope some of the students take up the offer to join.
With term 2 wrapping up, we have our last big event of the term coming on Friday the 23rd of June - Cross Country. The boys and girls from all the classes will be participating in races throughout the day, students from the Satellite classes will be running with their year groups.
A reminder that Monday the 17th of July is a pupil free day. I hope everyone has a safe and happy break; we look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday the 18th of July for the commencement of Term 3.
Kind regards,
Chris Ralph

Secondary News
News from the Heights,
Secondary has been going full throttle in the second half of the term. Teachers have been finalising their reports and it has been wonderful to read through and see the amazing progress that our students have made.
This year we slightly changed the program that we run over in our Enterprise and Training Centre. All I can say is the program is brilliant, the work is outstanding and the students love it. Well done team, the action over there is nothing short of outstanding.
Earlier this term we also had the amazing Sensorium come to the school with the production “Whoosh”. A true space and Sci Fi adventure. Everyone loved the event and thank you to Karli for not only organising but also providing a variety of activities and lessons on space to get everyone into the mood.
Whilst we are on fantastic events, Room 26 and 27 had their assembly on Tuesday the 20thJune. The play was outstanding with everyone contributing wonderfully. The acting was top notch, with everyone playing their roles wonderfully and quite frankly the effort and energy put into the production was awesome. Well done to all involved and I must say the standard for entertainment at our assemblies continues to be set at a very high level.
Until next time
Kind regards,
Heath Bradley

Communication Intensive Group
Kaya,
What an interesting and engaging term our students have had.
Secondary classes have participated in another Sensorium Theatre incursion: Whoosh! This was an interactive multi-sensory adventure that put our students in the Captain's Chair! Secondary students took part in an interactive incursion and joined Sensorium crew and explored outer space, experienced hyperdrive and travelled all the way to the mysterious Planet X. This was an out of this world adventure. Thanks go to Karli Dore for organising this event and to Heath Bradley for including secondary Communication Intensive classes. Pictures of the incursion are below.
Room 22 wanted to share with you their Pirate Day. It is always so warming to see how committed staff are to enriching their student’s lives and being part of all the fun days. Great effort everyone.
Staff will be undertaking numeracy training with myself and the School of Special Educational Needs: Sensory (SSENS) at the end of Term 3. This is an opportunity for staff to build professional learning on how to make concrete sensory numeracy curriculum focused resources for our students with vision impairment.
Date reminder: Room 3 Assembly is week 10 on Wednesday the 28th of June 2023 at 9:15am in the undercover assembly area. I look forward to seeing parents and carers of Room 3 students on this date.
Overall, I’d like to thank all parents, guardians and staff for a brilliant term, and I am looking forward to Term 4.
Kind Regards,
Sharon Rollinson

Early Years Learning Centre
This semester Room 30 has participated in music incursions run by Angel, the music therapist. Each session the students engaged in a variety of songs using different instruments and props. Students enjoyed singing along to the hello and goodbye song, as well as choosing nursery rhymes for Angel to sing by selecting one from a visual choice board.
We celebrated Pirate Day this term, raising money for childhood brain cancer research by dressing up as Pirates! We have also been working on our play skills by turn-taking and sharing with our peers which has been lots of fun.

Room 19
We can’t believe Term 2 is almost over! We have had an extremely busy term learning the story ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’ by Mem Fox. This story provided rich learning experiences across the curriculum, from literacy to numeracy, art, and music. We made and ate green jelly and decorated green sheep biscuits. We also learned to communicate this story using Key Word Sign and shared this for our class assembly item. We look forward to next term and learning a new story.

Room 20
Room 20 have had a fantastic term. We have been reading old, famous stories like ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and writing about our favourite characters. In maths, we have been busy trying out all our new maths games and activities which we have had so much fun with. Our favourite day of the week must be Wednesday because we go to the library in the morning and have cooking lessons in the afternoon. This term we have made fairy bread, sandwiches, cookies, and pizza – yum! Our assembly item was a lot of fun, singing about how many fingers and toes we have. We can’t wait for the second half of the year!

Room 21
Room 21 have had another successful Term! The students have been working hard on their ASDAN portfolios by engaging in music lessons and sensory choice making activities. We have been using the Interactive Whiteboard to supplement our learning and have fun completing patterns and playing number bingo! Well Done Team 21!

Room 22
We have had some exciting incursions that we have participated in this term. The Sensorium Theatre did a visual presentation of ‘Wombat Stew’ which was full of music, laughing and sensory items to touch like the ‘gooey, brewy’ wombat stew. Some of us went into the world of ‘space’ during the ‘Whoosh’ incursion where we experienced different sounds and fluorescent lights.
Kenneth delivered a message to our maintenance staff to say thank you for all the hard work they do in our gardens around our school. Exploring living things like the wet, cold soil, the dry hard seeds, and the new plants that grew from the seeds was fun. We re-planted them in a garden bed so we could watch them grow throughout the term, and we are hoping to harvest some vegetables from these plants in Term 3.
We made our own wrapping paper and painted three canvases for the special ladies in our lives. Everyone chose their colours and were helped to apply the paint to the paper and the canvas. It was fun using a squeegee to apply the paint to the canvas.
Our classmate Téa participated in this year’s ‘Fun Run’ with her family and friends. It was a fabulous day! Great effort everyone!
We’re excited to see what we’ll be doing next term!

Room 23
The students in Room 23 have been working hard this term, in particular with Shared Reading. We have been focusing on our theme of ‘Living Things’ in class and watching our new fish in their tank.
We have all participated in two amazing incursions this term with the Sensorium Theatre who dramatized ‘Wombat Stew’ for five weeks and the Whoosh Theatre incursion. We hope everyone has a great break. See you all next term.

Room 24
Room 24 can’t believe how fast Term 2 has flown passed us. We’ve continued with our learning programs but have also enjoyed incursions, an excursion to the city, soccer, pre-work skills and games in class. We also say goodbye and best wishes to Emma who has left for her new school. Wishing everyone a happy and safe holidays!

Room 27
It has been a very busy term so far in Room 27, we were lucky enough to go to Whoosh this term and we had an absolute blast! On our journey in the spaceship, we visited different planets and even had to repair the ship to get back to Earth. The students in Room 27 enjoyed every minute of it.
We also had our first excursion as a class, where we went to Morley Event Cinema to watch ‘Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse’. It was a day full of fun and laughs and we even got a chance to work on our social skills and dealing with money. We can’t wait for the next excursion.

Room 28
Room 28 has incorporated activities of leisure into some of the afternoon learning periods. Bingo is one of the activities we have explored. There are three different types of bingo boards that practice alphabet letters, emotions and numbers. Students are required to listen to the ‘Bingo Master’ and place a counter on the square if they have it. Here are some pictures of us enjoying learning.

Room 29
Room 29 have really enjoyed science classes with their new science teacher Jean-Claude Hortense. The students are learning about hot and cold through presentations and experiments. These observations and investigations are very beneficial to the students of Room 29.

Satellite 3
We have had a busy but fun-filled term 2. The students enjoyed an incursion by the Yirra Yaakin theatre company who performed the play “Lingo Lah Lah” which focused on the Noongar language. In science with Ms Jones, the students have learnt about states of matter and have conducted a range of fun experiments. In week 9 the students had cross country, which we had been practicing running the route. As we approach the end of the term, I wish all the students and their families a safe and relaxing school holidays.

Satellite 4
This term the Satellite 4 class participated in a football clinic. They learned football skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting and team games. The students had opportunities to practice these skills during these sessions and everyone was eager to show off their skills.
The Satellite 4 students dressed up for Dress Like a Pirate Day. They had loads of fun showing off their costumes and pretending to be pirates for the day.

Art
Kaya wanjoo. We have arrived at the end of semester one and the amount of fantastic work that has been created in the Arts and Enterprise program is to be commended. Students have applied themselves and produced an abundance of works that are starting to be framed up for the end of year annual art exhibition.
It hasn’t all been hard work this term. Midterm, the senior students were able to experience Whoosh, a sensory theatre show that was put on by Sensorium Theatre Company and Musica Viva also presented a percussion extravaganza. Our Arts Week festivities were held early this year and there were many smiles and laughs to be seen. Thank you to all the staff who helped maximise student participation and enjoyment. I personally had a great time and have enjoyed reflecting and looking through all the wonderful photos that captured many precious moments.
I hope everyone enjoys the rest of what this term has to offer. Stay warm and I look forward to sharing more arts and enterprise news next term.

Workplace learning
Recently Durham Road students have started work experience at Paraquad Industries in Shenton Park. Paraquad is part of Alinea, an organisation that provides support for the elderly and people with disabilities.
As an employer who has supported employment options for people with disabilities it provides an excellent opportunity for work experience. Schools are allocated work experience in a specialist area chosen from:
- General packaging and recycling
- Sorting of household collections and clothing bin donations
- Industrial wiper manufacturing
- Retail (op shop)
For adults with disabilities there are additional options such as working at the Container Deposit Scheme, the book shop and other supported employment environments.
If you have a passion for books it is worth visiting the bookshop, open weekdays and operates once a month on a Saturday.
Transportation for the students from Durham Road is via taxi, ensuring maximum time at work experience in spite of the distance involved. Within Paraquad Industries, the students are primarily involved in sorting donations in preparation for their transfer to op shops.
During their time at Paraquad Industries, the students have the option to order lunch from the canteen or bring their own lunch, which can be heated and collected at a designated time.
Overall, the addition of these placements at Paraquad Industries has been a positive development for the workplace selection of Durham Road
